A remarkable botanical marvel has captured attention in Dharwad, Karnataka, where a homegrown Cereus peruvianus has reached an extraordinary height of 24 metres. Located at the Shri Dharmathala Manjunatheshwar College of Dental Sciences, this towering cactus was planted on 15 August 2002 and has since grown steadily into a striking natural landmark. Its ribbed green stem, lined with sharp spines, produces stunning funnel-shaped flowers that bloom in pure white during the night and gracefully fade to a copper hue by morning. This seasonal spectacle, most prominent in September, reflects the rhythmic beauty and quiet resilience of nature.

Native to South America, this species-popularly known as Hedge Cactus, Peruvian Apple, or Column Cactus-also bears edible red fruits called Pitaya, widely enjoyed in Latin America. Thriving in well-drained soil, bright sunlight, and low humidity, such cacti are rarely seen growing to such heights in India, where they are typically used as hedges. Dharwad’s long-standing association with these towering plants is noteworthy, as the region had previously recorded a similar feat in 2004. This enduring growth story stands as an inspiring testament to patience, environmental harmony, and the extraordinary potential hidden within nature.

A Giant Leap into Orbit: India Showcases Space Excellence with Record Satellite Launch

On 28 April 2008, India marked a historic milestone in its space journey as PSLV-C9 successfully placed ten satellites into orbit in a single mission. Carrying its then-heaviest payload of 824 kg aboard a 230-tonne launch vehicle, the mission demonstrated the remarkable precision and capability of ISRO. The launch included the advanced Cartosat-2A remote sensing satellite, the Indian Mini Satellite (IMS-1), and eight international nano satellites from countries such as Canada, Germany, Denmark, Japan, and the Netherlands. This achievement stood as a powerful testament to India’s growing strength and reliability in the global space arena.

Cartosat-2A, weighing 690 kg, was equipped with a high-resolution panchromatic camera capable of capturing detailed images across a wide swathe, enhancing India’s earth observation capabilities. Meanwhile, IMS-1, a compact 83 kg satellite, showcased innovative miniaturised technologies and opened avenues for data sharing with developing nations. The inclusion of eight foreign nano satellites, developed by universities and research institutions, further highlighted India’s expanding role in international space collaboration. This mission not only strengthened technological confidence but also positioned India as a trusted and competitive partner in global space exploration.
