Largest mosque in India

Largest mosque in India

Jama Masjid, located in the heart of Old Delhi near Chandni Chowk and overlooking the Red Fort, is the largest mosque in India and a magnificent example of Mughal architecture. Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan, the mosque was completed in 1656 after fifteen years of construction, with over 5,000 artisans contributing to its grandeur. Built with red sandstone and white marble, it features three imposing gateways, four towers, and two towering minarets. The mosque can accommodate around 25,000 worshippers at a time, making it a central site for Islamic devotion and gatherings.

The mosque's vast rectangular courtyard, measuring approximately 75 by 66 meters, is paved and open to the sky, allowing worshippers to gather in large numbers. The western chamber, a massive hall supported by 260 intricately carved pillars influenced by Hindu and Jain styles, adds to the mosque’s architectural richness. The central courtyard is accessible from the eastern entrance, which also leads to a secondary enclosure housing the mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed Shah. Jama Masjid remains a timeless symbol of India's religious harmony, historical legacy, and architectural splendor.
