He first summited on May 1, 1963, as part of an American expedition led by Norman Dyhrenfurth and supported by the National Geographic Society. He reached the top with Jim Whittaker, who became the first American to conquer Everest. This remarkable achievement gained global recognition for Gombu’s mountaineering skill.
Gombu scaled Everest a second time on May 20, 1965, during India’s third successful expedition led by Captain M.S. Kohli. He reached the summit alongside A.S. Cheema, helping mark a historic moment for Indian mountaineering. With this feat, Gombu became the first person to climb Everest twice. His courage and endurance inspired future generations of climbers across the world.
